Pan-Africa Fiction Award
Back in December we brought you the shortlist for the Etisalat Prize for Literature, fast becoming the most prestigious literary prize for African Fiction.
The prize is in its third year and it’s growing in popularity and starting to be taken very seriously around the world. And now, from the shortlist announced in December the Etisalat Prize for Literature 2015 is chosen.
The 2015 winner is Fiston Mwanza Mujila for Tram 83, announced on Saturday 19th March. Tram 83 is Mujila’s debut novel and was originally written in French. The 35-year old author is the first Francophone author to win the prestigious award, which is the first ever pan-African prize for African authors.
The winner was announced by the Chair of Judges at the Intercontinental Lagos Hotel and was broadcast live on HIP TV, watched by over 30 million viewers. The winner gets not just the kudos of the prize, but also a winning cheque of £15,000, and the exposure that winning a prestigious literary award brings.
Tram 83 is the debut novel of Republic of Congo author Fiston Mwanza Mujila and is also the first novel from the area to be translated into English in over two decades. The novel centres around Lucien, an idealistic writer sucked into the dystopian world of his friend, Requiem, a gangster with an outrageous and glamorously debauched lifestyle.
