30 Literary Crushes You Can’t Help but Adore

By June 15, 2016Literature

I have to say I am a fickle reader and have had many a literary crush in my reading life but there are one or two that have always held a special place in my heart. I can’t explain why they are so special to me, they’re usually a bit of an arse to be honest but for some reason there are a few literary crushes that just will not go away.

It seems our Social Media followers enjoy a fair few literary crushes too, at least those who answered our poll question anyway and with over 400 responses we have put together a top 30 Literary Crushes List for you to enjoy. Has your crush made the top 30?

Mr Darcy – Pride and Prejudice

Ahhh the archetypal, aloof and utterly adorable romantic hero; Fitzwilliam Darcy’s desperate need to take care of Elizabeth and her family whilst remaining socially correct is just so endearing. It is no surprise that we readers could not help but swoon when presented when presented with this delectable character.

Jamie Fraser – Outlander

Who else would you want to be greeted by when flung back in time than a dashing Highland Warrior. Well educated and wealthy, he has the requisite tragedy filled past and uncertain future to make him dreamily dangerous and just the kind of man we’d want to see doing his very own Officer and a Gentleman on his way to rescue us from the dullness of real life – dressed in a kilt of course.

Atticus Finch – To Kill A Mockingbird

In third place, we have Atticus, never dad, always Atticus; a lawyer who wants to do right, a dad who tells it as it is and an all round good egg. Renowned for saying what he means and meaning what he says Atticus is the epitome of the thinking reader’s crumpet.

Sebastian Morgenstern – Shadowhunter Chronicles

Born as the result of an experiment by his father, loathed by his mother and raised in a loveless family, Sebastian has just enough darkness in him to excite all of us who like our crush to be just a little bit of a bad boy. This is definitely a crush that is safest when the subject of our adoration lives on the pages of a novel.

Augustus Waters – The Fault in Our Stars

Right from the first moment we meet Augustus in we know that he is going to be one of those people who squeezes every drop of life out of every moment he lives. The kind of teenage boy who will grow up to be a great man, who will do things rather than wait for them to be done and someone with whom life will never be dull. His enthusiasm for everything and his determination to be happy is contagious, life with Augustus is going to be a roller coaster ride and he is a deserving entry into our featured top ten.

Ronald Weasley – Harry Potter

Well who would have thought; how lovely to see Harry’s sidekick getting top spot out of the many characters mentioned. Dopey, clumsy, catastrophically accident prone and yet his loyalty, his lust for life and his amiable outlook has him outstripping his rivals to finish in a tidy sixth spot when it comes to us readers finding him really rather adorable.

Dracula – Dracula

There is something about the forbidden, about the dangerous and the unforgiving that has many a heart fluttering with desire and Bram Stoker’s blood sucking protagonist is no exception. How many of us I wonder, have left our bedroom windows open with the hope of a midnight visitor swathed in shadows and with a penchant for a slender throat?

Stu Redman – The Stand

In eighth place we find the accidental leader of the survivors of Stephen King’s Captain Trips pandemic, Stu is everything a post apocalyptic woman could want, inventive, resourceful, brave, decisive and yet still modest enough to know when to hand the reins over to an old lady, Stu is the kind of guy we all hope to meet in an emergency and we all want to be the one he decides to take special care of.

Jon Snow – A Song of Ice and Fire

You know nothing Jon Snow; well he may not but we readers know enough about this bastard child of Ned Stark to keep us warm no matter how soon winter is coming. He has survived George’s pen of death many times and that alone makes him one of the very few characters we can dare to hope for but his loyalty to those who have cast him aside, his determination to fulfil his destiny and his strong morals make him even more of a literary catch to those of us who are still waiting for the epic climax.

 Dimitri Belikov – Vampire Academy

What is it with the romance of vampires? Our featured top ten finishes with another vampire Dimitri Belikov, guard and guardian and widely considered to be a God due to his skills as a fighter, Dimitri is certainly the kind of character you want fighting your corner and if he just so happens to be completely gorgeous when doing it, well that’s a bonus.
