John Grisham – The Tumor, A Free Novel

Best selling author John Grisham has put his not inconsiderable literary weight behind what is being touted as a pioneering treatment for cancer by releasing a fictional novel about a man who is suffering from brain cancer. Set a decade into the future The Tumor follows 35 year old Paul as he is treated with focused ultrasound, a technique which is anything but fictional and one that several  companies are researching with the hope that it will be able to cure several cancers and Alzheimer’s.

Although the treatment has already been given the go ahead in the US to be used in cases of prostate cancer among other illnesses as there is so little data, insurers in the country are reluctant to provide coverage for its use. Grisham however is on the board of The Focused Ultrasound Foundation which is a non profit organisation that promotes this treatment and he believes The Tumor is one of the most important books he has ever written and has therefor offered it for free!

As with all things, having a famous face on board is always a positive and Maurice Ferré, InSightec’s chief executive, said enquiries from patients about the company’s devices for the brain had increased “by a factor of a hundred” since the book’s release.

It is hoped that by releasing this novel, Grisham will garner interest in the treatment used and hopefully this will equate to higher awareness of focused ultrasound technology and perhaps generate more funding for further research for the companies hoping to turn a niche treatment into a mainstream cure.
