Song of Ice and Fire – GoT Plot Twist in The Winds of Winter but not on TV!

By February 25, 2016Literature

I never thought I would say this, not after all the years I have waited, the broken promises and the missed deadlines but – George R.R. Martin – I think I love you!

I had begun to worry that George had sold out to the TV Gods and decided that he didn’t actually need to write the final books of his A Song of Ice and Fire saga but it seems that in The Winds of Winter he has remained loyal to his true fans, those of us who have invested hundreds of hours reading about the Targaryans, the Lannisters, the Starks, the Baratheons and all the supporting characters in their epic battles for power and land.

George has let slip that a character who has perished in the television series will feature in his sixth novel The Winds of Winter and as the television show has already killed them off, they cannot follow the plot he has chosen to write.

Martin revealed that after years of deliberation he decided the plot twist just had to appear in his next SoIaF novel in an interview with IGN stating “I have decided to do it. Will you know it? I don’t know. It is fairly obvious because it is something that involves a couple of characters, one of which is dead on the show, and not dead in the books. So the show can’t do it, unfortunately, because they have killed someone I have not killed.”
Oh you silly television executives, I bet you regret that little plot change now don’t you!

This news is hugely pleasing to those of us who have read and loved Martin’s novels and who are waiting (not so) patiently for the next book to appear in the shops.

Although the latest deadline has been missed, in a recent blog Martin wrote in reply to a fan question that he was now totally focused on writing the books and would be involved in no new projects until everything was finished and ready for publication.
