Fleabag: The Scriptures Coming Soon

When series two of Fleabag ended earlier this year, many watchers (including us at For Reading Addicts) were left with a Phoebe Waller-Bridge shaped hole in our lives. Earlier this month, we told you about the upcoming release of a special edition of the stage show’s script, featuring an introduction from comedian and Guilty Feminist, Deborah Frances-White, and the Fleabag news doesn’t stop there!

Now, Fleabag fans brace yourselves, for more Fleabag content is coming your way. A book titled, Fleabag: The Scriptures will be published after the special edition stage show script, later this year.

Fleabag: The Scriptures will bring together the compete filming scripts from series one and two of the multi-award-winning BBC Three TV series full of wit, dark comedy, drama, emotion, and perfectly written and executed dialogue. Alongside the scripts, the book will be annotated with never-before-seen stage directions and some brand-new writing from the brilliant Phoebe Waller-Bridge herself!

The book will be published by Sceptre after an eight-way bidding war to win, resulting in the single-book deal thought to be worth around £500,000 (although Sceptre have declined to comment on the financial figures).

Emma Herdman, the Editorial director from Sceptre Books said “I first emailed Phoebe’s agents three years ago, after watching season one of Fleabag, and I’ve been pestering them ever since. I was sure that Phoebe would be a perfect fit for the Sceptre list – a boundary-breaking, whip-smart, hugely creative writer. Happily, Fleabag: The Scriptures showcases all we’ve loved about Fleabag, but also proves that what we’ve seen on our screens is only the tip of the iceberg. The reading experience, with the stage directions and Phoebe’s original work, is just as rich as you’d imagine. Fleabag: The Scriptures will make for a perfect Christmas gift, but this is also a work that will stand the test of time. I know that readers will treasure this piece of cultural history and fall madly in love with Fleabag all over again.”

Although we have to wait until November to read it, in their announcement, the publishers also released an enticing excerpt from the book – a scene which all fans of Fleabag will recognise from the show – “Her coat falls open. She only has her bra on underneath. She pulls out the little sculpture of the woman with no arms. It sits on her lap. Two women. One real. One not. Both with their innate femininity out.”

Fleabag: The Scriptures is available to pre-order now and will be published in the UK on 5th November and in North America on the same day (rights owned by Ballantine, an imprint of Random House).
