Florence and the Machine to Score Great Gatsby Musical

By May 2, 2021Adaptations, News

Since F. Scott’ Fitzgerlad’s modern classic The Great Gatsby has fallen into the public domain, it’s only been a matter of time before we saw new adaptations of the iconic story.

It has been announced that work has begun on a musical based on the novel, and the music will be scored by Florence Welch and her band Florence and the Machine, with academy award nominee Thomas Bartlett tackling the songwriting.

The combination of Florence, musicals and The Great Gatsby sounds like a match made in heaven, with Welch saying: “Musicals were my first love and I feel a deep connection to Fitzgerald’s broken romanticism. This book has haunted me for a large part of my life. It contains some of my favourite lines in literature.

“It is an honour to have been offered the chance to recreate this book in a song,” she said.

As Harpers Bazaar reports, while no dates have been announced yet, the musical is set to make its debut in New York. This is not the first time Welch has been involved with the story of Gatsby. Florence and the Machine recorded Over the Love for Baz Luhrman’s 2013 film adaptation starring Leonardo DiCaprio and Carey Mulligan.

The Great Gatsby was first published in 1925 and has gone on to become one of the most critically acclaimed books of the twentieth century, and synonymous with The Roaring ’20s. It entered the public domain on 1 January 2021.
