Harry Potter Prequel Voldemort: Origins of the Heir Takes Fan-Fic to the Big Screen

By May 29, 2017Adaptations, News, Video

When we stumbled upon the Facebook page for Voldemort: Origins of the Heir this week we assumed it was the build up for the second Fantastic Beasts film. Rowling has already confirmed that the series will encompass the fight between Grindenwald and Dumbledore, expanding on much of the back-story for the book. However, further research tells us that this new Voldemort prequel isn’t part of the franchise at all, it’s actually fan-fiction and the first trailer is out!

The Facebook page appeared last year and has been put together by fans of the series. The inspiration was Harry Potter and the Half Blood Prince, where we find out how Voldemort created the Horcruxes. Voldemort: Origins of the Heir starts when Voldemort kills Hepzibah Smith and follows the story of her descendent Grisha MacLaggen who suspects that dark forces are at play.

It’s said that Tryangle films, who are making the movie, have come to an agreement with Warner Bros, and despite an earlier take down notice, the film is now going ahead. Here’s the first teaser:

The teaser itself looks visually stunning, although as a Brit I’m slightly concerned about the accents already. However, as a huge fan of the original books, I have bigger concerns. If Grisha MacLaggen succeeds in her quest, then Harry Potter can never exist, so do we already know the end of the film? With extra authors bringing us The Cursed Child, and now another team of writers bringing us Voldemort’s story, are we in danger of breaking canon? I’m not sure I’ll ever read the Goblet of Fire the same way after reading The Cursed Child and I’m not sure I want The Half Blood Prince also spoiling in my mind.

Harry Potter is perfect as it is, it’s a whole, a circle of perfection, no need for additional stories, it never ends well. I was waiting to read that Harry Potter the book will be mandatory to read in the schools of UK, because in my humble opinion this book (I see it as a whole, I repeat) is already a classic. J.K. Rowling created the best book of our decades and that should be enough.
