By March 15, 2021Adaptations, News

Walter Tevis’s bildungsroman The Queen’s Gambit (1983) is set to become a stage musical.

The novel, and Netflix mini-series, follows Beth Harmon from her childhood at an orphanage, through her struggles with drug and alcohol addiction, to becoming a chess grandmaster.

The stage rights to the Walter Tevis 1983 novel were acquired by the entertainment company Level Forward, and given their recent experience with Broadway productions it looks like the musical will be initially put on in New York.

The Netflix mini-series adaptation was an instant hit with both critics and the general public with over 62 million Netflix account users watching the award-winning seven-part series starring Anya Taylor-Joy.

“It is a privilege for Level Forward to lead the charge of bringing The Queen’s Gambit to the stage through the beloved and enduring craft of musical theatre,” said Level Forward’s CEO, Adrienne Becker, and producer Julia Dunetz in a statement.

“Audiences are already sharing in the friendship and fortitude of the story’s inspiring women who energise and sustain Beth Harmon’s journey and ultimate triumph. The story is a siren call amidst our contemporary struggles for gender and racial equity, and we’re looking forward to moving the project forward.”
