Donald Trump is suing his niece, Mary Trump, and the New York Times after they released information on his family wealth and tax documents.
Mary Trump revealed in her book Too Much and Never Enough: How My Family Created the World’s Most Dangerous Man that she provided confidential documents to newspaper reporters.
Trump’s lawsuit accuses his niece of breaching a settlement agreement by disclosing tax records she received in a family dispute over the estate of Fred Trump Sr.
In the New York Times it was suggested that Trump’s claims that he is a ‘self-made’ man were false and that his wealth is actually from his father, Fred Sr, who had given him at least $413m and had dealings in tax avoidance schemes.
Donald Trump’s lawsuit against the Times, accuses the paper and three of its investigative reporters, Susanne Craig, David Barstow and Russell Buettner, of purposefully seeking out Mary Trump for the damning documents. The suit claims the paper and reporters were very aware of the settlement agreement that should have barred her from disclosing the documents.
Mary Trump said in a statement to NBC: “I think he [Donald] is a loser, and he is going to throw anything against the wall he can. It’s desperation. The walls are closing in and he is throwing anything against the wall that he thinks will stick. As is always the case with Donald, he’ll try and change the subject.”
Mary Trump’s book Too Much and Never Enough: How My Family Created the World’s Most Dangerous Man was published in 2020 despite an attempted court ordered block from Donald Trump’s brother Robert who also cited the 2001 settlement agreement.
