Choosing the Best Bookish Resolutions for the New Year

By December 31, 2016December 28th, 2017Reading Habits

While all my friends are planning going down the gym, quitting smoking and eating healthier for the New Year, I’m sitting here wondering how I can read better next year! Ok, so it may not be as ambitious as some resolutions, but they should be easy to stick to and hopefully my bookish resolutions won’t fall by the wayside by February.

While there are stacks of lists about bookish resolutions, we have to also take into consideration that we are all individual and may want to improve ourselves in different ways. For instance, a common resolution I’ve seen is to finish every book you start, but I’m at a stage in life where I feel I’ve pushed myself through enough bad books!

So when choosing your bookish resolutions, think about yourself personally and what you’d like to improve about your favourite hobby. Here’s what I’ve chosen for my bookish resolutions, let us know yours in the comments!

No More Bad Books!

As I mentioned above I have forced myself through so many books I’m not enjoying, and while sometimes there is reward at the end more often than not I’m just left feeling frustrated. So this year, no more bad books. With so many books out there, I’m not going to feel so bad about putting the ones I’m not getting along with aside.

Of course if you’re young and you’re always putting books aside then your resolution should be the complete opposite of mine!

I’m going to Live in My Books

I’m a voracious reader but I’ve never really got involved in literary worlds. I’ve never been to Baker Street, I’ve never been to a book signing or bookshop event, and I’ve never even been to a literary festival!

I intend on changing this in this coming year with a literary tour or two and trip to Hay for the festival in the summer.

More Nonfiction

I love memoirs, but really that’s the only non-fiction genre I read. I have entire shelves of non-fiction books but I can never do more than dip in for a few pages. I intend on making an effort to read more nonfiction next year and I’ll be looking to you for inspiration and reading suggestions!

More Diverse Authors

I started this a couple of years ago and I’ve discovered some wonderful authors such as Khaled Hosseini, Toni Morrison and others and I intend on continuing that this year. I’m hoping the FRA reading challenge will help.

Support Independent Bookshops

This year I’m going to try and give more of my book funds to indie bookshops! This one speaks for itself.

So that’s it, that’s how I’m intending on becoming a better reader next year. Do you have any bookish resolutions? Tell us about them.
