Go Set a Watchman Cover Reveal

By March 25, 2015New Releases, The Classics

It might well be the most anticipated novel release ever, and the news that Go Set a Watchman is to be released later this year has caused an absolute frenzy. This morning the publishers unveiled the jacket for the book – two in fact – one for UK audiences, and another for the US.

Also launched today were social media channels across the board with the official Go Set a Watchman Facebook, Twitter, Instagram and Tumblr launching today. I think it’s safe to assume that the author won’t be running these social media channels herself, and I’m not really sure how I feel.

The US jacket. I think this is the closest of the two to the iconic original cover many of us think of when we bring to mind To Kill a Mockingbird.

The UK jacket, that I am actually not that keen on. I’m not sure where the orange fits in and I’m already wondering if I can find myself a US copy.

Does Go Set a Watchman need media hype and overt promotion? When we brought you the article about the launch, 47 of you had pre-ordered it through our links by the next morning, something that has never happened before. We know that 2 million copies are to be printed off on the first run, we’re just not sure if sales need a huge campaign, or how the quiet and reclusive Harper Lee may be feeling about any of it.

Both jacket covers hark back to the original bookcover, the silhouetted branch, the bird, but we do notice the US cover features a train and this could be a clue. We already know that a watchman is employed to keep watch, or stand guard but what does this mean for the novel? I guess we’ll all have to wait and see. Let us know in the comments what you think of the cover art.

It seems inevitable that good or bad (that’s the novel and the intentions of the publisher), Go Set a Watchman will be one of the best selling novels of all time but with so much media hype the world may have very high expectations and it’s worth remembering that this is the novel the publishers originally turned down, requesting the story to be rewritten into what became To Kill a Mockingbird.
