The End of an Era – Final Moments of the old Birmingham Central Library

By November 3, 2016Video

Flying over the former home of the Birmingham Central Library which was in use from 1974 until 2013 and was for a while the largest non-national library in Europe this video taken by a drone shows the end of the building designed by architect John Madin to hold tens of thousands of books and built in the Brutalist style that was so popular in the early 70s.

Although Birmingham now sports a brand new ultra modern library I am saddened at the loss of this gloriously ugly building and I can still remember many wonderful hours spent wondering its aisles now long gone and sitting in the once magnificently daunting and now completely flattened reference library studying books on mammalian physiology in the days before Google.
