Claire Foy shot to fame in 2016 when Netflix aired the first season of the critically acclaimed historical drama The Crown, which starred Foy in the role of a young Queen Elizabeth II during the early years of her reign. Now Foy will be swapping the small screen for the big screen as she plays the role of Lisbeth Salander in the upcoming film adaptation of The Girl in the Spider’s Web.

The Girl in the Spider’s Web is a continuation of The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo series, the first three of which were written by Stieg Larsson before he sadly passed away unexpectedly. The original trilogy (The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo, The Girl Who Played with Fire, and The Girl Who Kicked the Hornet’s Nest) became hugely popular and were adapted into a very successful Swedish film trilogy starring Noomi Rapace as Lisbeth. A US adaptation was released in 2011 and featured Rooney Mara as Lisbeth and Daniel Craig as the journalist Mikael Blomkvist, the film was directed by David Fincher.

Following Larsson’s death, his publisher announced that the series would continue with writer David Lagercrantz. The first book published was The Girl in the Spider’s Web in 2013 and was followed up with The Girl Who Takes an Eye for an Eye in 2017. A film adaptation has been in development for The Girl in the Spider’s Web and it was announced that Claire Foy would play the role of the tough-as-nails Lisbeth Salander, a genius hacker with a troubled past who relies on her own form of justice.

The first trailer has been released and the film is set to hit cinemas later this year on November 9. Time will tell if it lives up to the high standards set by the previous films.
