The Girl With all the Gifts is a Zombie book with a difference and now it has been made into a film by Warner Bros. With a star studded cast including Sennia Nanua, Gemma Arterton, Glenn Close and Paddy Considine and directed by Colm McCarthy it promises to be an excellent adaptation of a very popular book.
It is the very near future and the world as we know it has been brought to its knees by a mutated fungus which infiltrates its host body and turns the victim into a ‘Hungry’. Filled with an insatiable desire for flesh, the Hungries threaten the lives of the last surviving humans. Mindless beings with no conscious thoughts they are simply eating machines who have lost all vestiges of humanity to their hunger. Except for a small group of children, still verbal, still intelligent, still willing to learn; children who maybe hold the key to survival but at what cost to them?
Miss Justineau is the children’s teacher, but her conscience pricks at her, she knows the fate of these youngsters knows what they are but cannot separate that fact from them being young and needing her protection. She worries about them and especially so when it comes to her favourite, Melanie, a little girl with an enquiring mind and a need to do well, be liked, and make Miss Justineau proud of her. When the time comes what will Miss Justineau do? The right thing, or the proper thing? An excellent book by M.R Carey that promises to be an equally excellent film if this trailer is anything to go by.
