The broadening of the ambit of one’s preoccupations and concerns away from a narrow focus on those things most palpably human and most closely pertinent to humanity; First used in 1880 by Charles Grant Blairfindie Allen a Canadian science writer and novelist, this word returned to the OED in 1989.
