Word of the Day – Cozen

By January 22, 2017Word of the Day

Cozen (verb)

koz-un

Trick or deceive: Obtain by deception.

Although uncertain it is thought that perhaps cozen comes from the obsolete Italian cozzonare to cheat, in turn from cozzone middleman, broker, taken from the Latin cocio dealer.

Example sentences

“A good speech is not full of subtle rhetoric, cozening shifts in vocal tone, and facial nuance.”

“How he was able to cozen such a victory is beyond the vast majority of the population.”
