Word of the Day – Diphthong

By October 2, 2015Word of the Day

Diphthong (n)

diff-thong

A sound formed by the combination of two vowels in a single syllable, in which the sound begins as one vowel and moves towards another (as in coin and loud).

I never knew there was a word for this; even better that it is such a lovely sounding word.

Example sentences

“Would eau be a diphthong or does the third vowel make it something else?”

“Diphthongs are a Scrabble enthusiasts life saver .”
