Word of the Day – Orthoepy

Orthoepy (adj)

oor-fth-oh-epp-ee

The correct or accepted pronunciation of words; the study of correct or accepted pronunciation.

Something that we bibliophiles fall foul of on occasion, especially when the only time we have ever encountered a word has been in print.

Example sentences

“After pronouncing gaol incorrectly for twenty five years, two minutes of orthoepy showed me the correct way to say it.”

“Along with the correct spelling and usage of words, I believe that orthoepy should be taught to all school children.”
