Never fear: adult activity books are here! In fact they’ve always been here, but many of us may need a reminder.
From 16th century titillation to 20th century silliness, here’s a small selection of some risqué and humorous offerings.
New York Public Library holds regular exhibitions to display often-forgotten works, historical pieces, and literary wonders of the world. Titled “Love in Venice,” a recent exhibition at The New York Public Library examines the artistic and literary culture of Venice through history, including some playful and titillating lift-the-flap books from the late 16th century. One could undress the Venetian lady by gently flipping at her flaps, or take a peek at what that couple are doing in that boat…
If you prefer something a little more educational then look no further than this 17th Century German book attributed to Johann Remmelin and engraver Johann Schultes. The book’s title is pretty long, and in German, but translates as: “A small mirror of the world, that is, the illustration of the divine creation on the human body: with a co-author of an explanation: so where to God’s whiteness: serving as a human being.”
More recently there have been some very NSFW books for adults covering subjects such as alcohol, and sex. These modern adult activity books are available to purchase, so if you have a friend with an open mind, and a dirty sense of humour, these may be perfect for them!
First up is The Kama Sutra of Vatsyayana in Pop-up by Sir Richard Burton and F.F. Arbuthnot.
Next is this humorous offering from Michael Wells et al- Ultimate Cocktail Pop-up Book. It is from the 1980s so has a retro vibe to it, and some very odd Spitting Image-esque illustrations.
And finally… This beautiful addition to the pop-up world by Stephen King!
Just goes to show that there is a pop-up, lift-the-flap book out there to suit most tastes!
