Blackwell’s Names its Book of the Year 2017

By December 11, 2017Bookshops, Literary Awards

It’s that time of year when we reflect over the past year in literature to see what the real stand out releases of the year were. This week Blackwell’s Bookshops announced their book of the year for 2017 and it’s a book that started life as a lowly crowdfunder campaign.

Blackwell’s Book of the Year 2017 is Good Night Stories for Rebel Girls, a book that has really captured the zeitgeist of the women’s movement in 2017.

Good Night Stories for Rebel Girls was originally conceived as an idea back in April 2016 with a crowdfunder campaign. The book features the stories of one hundred women ranging from Elizabeth 1 to Serena Williams, promoting strong female figures for young girls.

Over the last couple of years there have been many discussions about the way girls, and women are portrayed in literature and in response we’ve seen some fantastic strong female led books shine through. Good Night Stories for Rebel Girls sits firmly in the non-fiction section but the beautifully illustrated set of 100 biographies of strong women has appealed to all ages.

The book beat off strong competition on the Blackwell’s shortlist, beating Arundhati Roy’s The Ministry of Utmost Happiness for fiction, Why I’m No Longer Talking to White People About Race  in nonfiction, and medical memoir This Is Going to Hurt  in the debut category.

Good Night Stories for Rebel Girls will now feature in promotions across all Blackwell’s stories in the New Year and the brand say they are thrilled to be promoting such an inspirational winner.
