It’s that time of the month again, where we look back over five decades of book releases to see what the hot releases of the past were. We’re into May and so this month it’s 50 years of May as we throwback to the past for our monthly feature.

This month’s list contains some well known books and whether you read them as new releases, or they offer some inspiration for the TBR today, we hope you enjoy our literary travel through 50 years.

Based on the biblical story of Dinah, the Red Tent explores femininity during historical times and conjures up vivid images of caravans, artisans and life in biblical times and was later adapted for movie.

Anthills of the Savannah – Chinua Achebe

A finalist for the 1987 Booker Prize, Anthills of the Savannah was Achebe’s fifth novel and was described upon release as the most important novel to come out of Africa and follows themes of politics and the Nigerian military in the most vivid way.

May 1977

A Scanner Darkly – Philip K. Dick

The award winning science fiction novel A Scanner Darkly was released on this month in 1977. Set in a dystopian California, yet semi-autobiographical the novel portrays drug culture, and was later adapted for a film of the same name.
