Netflix is Filming Stephen King’s Gerald’s Game

By October 18, 2016New Releases, News

Stephen King screen adaptations are an interesting bunch; often budget films they are regularly panned for the poor acting and dreadful scripts, with of course a few notable exceptions.  Fortunately in recent years it seems King has begun to attract some big names and has garnered quite a following in the film world and now everyone is clamouring to make their own film based on one of his books.

This year we have already heard of several adaptations including Cell, The Dark Tower and a remake of IT and now with the news that Netflix is filming Stephen King’s Gerald’s Game it looks one of his darker and more unusual novels is about to receive the moving picture treatment.

Gerald’s Game which was published in 1992 was a revelation to many of his Constant Readers. With 90% of the book focusing on just one character the story is filled with internal dialogue and memories which are definitely going to be a challenge to transfer into film, but with news of the casting of Carla Gugino and Bruce Greenwood and it being directed by Mike Flanagan it looks as though we might be on to a winner.

For those unfamiliar with the story Gerald’s Game joins married couple Jessie and Gerald Burlingame as they sneak off to their summer home for a naughty weekend during the off season. No one knows they’re there and no one is likely to bump into them.

Once inside the couple indulge in Gerald’s latest fetish but typical of King, things don’t go to plan and a tragic incident leaves Jessie alone and trapped. With just a stray dog and the voices in her head Jessie veers between reliving vivid and traumatic childhood memories and desperately trying to free herself from her restraints.

One of my favourite King novels Gerald’s Game was always one of his books that I thought would defy any attempt to turn it into a film so I am fascinated to see how Netflix does with a film that essentially all takes place in one woman’s mind.
