Word of the Day – Sesquipedalian

By May 26, 2016Word of the Day

sesquipedalian (adj) (formal)

ses-kwi-pid-ail-ee-an

Of a word, long, polysyllabic.

From Latin ‘a foot and a half’. There is a slightly irony of course in the word being so long! Also used to mean something that is characterised by long words.

Example sentences

“I can never spell his surname, it’s so sesquipedalian”

“Science journals and their sesquipedalian prose make for a long day!”
