Sales figures in the publishing industry were encouraging for 2016 and much of this has to do with the quality of literature released each year, so here’s hoping 2017 will be as successful a year for books with some hotly anticipated releases.
Today we’re taking a look ahead of the year, and hopefully helping you get ahead on your plans for reading in 2017 with books that we think will be firm favourites for the bestsellers lists this year ahead.
Homesick for Another World – Ottessa Moshfegh
Nominated for the Man Booker Prize 2016 for Eileen, Ottessa Moshfegh released her short story collection, Homesick for Another World, last week.
4 3 2 1 – Paul Auster
Released this month, 4 3 2 1 is Paul Auster’s first novel in seven years. The New York author has had previous success with Winter Journal and other novels but in 4 3 2 1 he recounts the life of Archibald Isaac Ferguson across four parallel lives.
Ragdoll – Daniel Cole
It often takes a while to get established on the publishing scene but former paramedic, Daniel Cole’s debut was part of a hotly contested three book deal and there’s already plans for a television adaptation. Ragdoll, the first in the three-book series is out in February.
Lincoln in the Bardo – George Saunders
Critically acclaimed, award winning short story writer, George Saunders’ first novel will be published in March of this year. Lincoln in the Bardo is a historical tale with the story of Abraham Lincoln and the death of his son, Willie.
The Cows – Dawn O’Porter
Columnist and presenter Dawn O’Porter follows up her young adult novel with her first novel for adults this April. The Cows is about three women friends dealing with the shame and judgements of modern life.
The Nothing – Hanif Kureishi
Buddha of Suburbia author and Whitbred prize winner Hanif Kureishi releases his novella, The Nothing, in May. A story about a famous ageing filmmaker who begins to suspect his wife is having an affair. Exciting stuff, but we’re still waiting for the cover release for this one.

Men without Women – Haruki Murakami
Readers are in for a treat with a brand new book from Haruki Murukami this year. Men without Women is a collection of short stories about men who have found themselves alone, and it’s out this May.
New Boy – Tracy Chevalier
Author of Girl with the Pearl Earring, Tracy Chevalier is the latest author to take part in the Hogarth Shakespeare project, rewriting the Bard’s work for a modern audience. The New Boy takes Othello to a schoolyard in Washington and it’s out on 11th May!
A Book of American Martyrs – Joyce Carol Oates
Prolific author Joyce Carol Oates has a new book out in June of this year. A Book of American Martyrs is about conflicting families, and tackles the weighty themes of religious extremism, gun violence and capital punishment.
Arundhati Roy – The Ministry of Utmost Happiness
It’s been a long time since the release of The God of Small Things, but Arundhati Roy is to release The Ministry of Utmost Happiness, her second novel, in June of this year.

How to Stop Time – Matt Haig
In July, Matt Haig is to release his first novel for adults since 2013 when The Humans was released. How to Stop Time tells the story of a man who never ages, although he looks 40 he has lived through four centuries. There’s no cover release for this yet, but it’s out on 6th July.
