A fundamental Albanian cultural, ethical, and moral code, often translated as “pledge of honor,” “trust,” or “to keep the promise”. It represents an unbreakable, sacred oath, deeply rooted in the Kanun (traditional customary law), requiring Albanians to protect guests, ensure safety, and uphold their word at all costs.

Besa is believed to be derived from the Albanian besë (oath/vow).
