6-Year-Old Donates over 7000 Books for Local School

Abby Ross, a six-year-old living in Louisville, Kentucky, has managed to collect over 7000 books which will be donated to her local Semple Elementary school where her mother works as a teacher.

The news was reported by local news site WDRB, who spoke with Abby’s mother, Lauren Ross.

“She gets something, and she thinks of who she can share it with,” said Lauren Ross, Abby’s mom. “She’s always been that kid since she was really little. She said, ‘I really have a lot of books, Mommy.’ And I said, ‘You know, some of the students I work with at school, they don’t have any books or very many books to read,'” Lauren said. “She said, ‘Well, Mommy, I want to give them some of mine. Can I?’ Absolutely you can!”

This isn’t the first time Abby has collected books for her local school. Last year she collected over 2,000 books but wanted to do even more this year. “So that they have books to read,” said the young girl.

Abby was aided by her parents who asked neighbors, co-workers, local businesses, and Abby’s classmates for help with the project. The Ross’ home soon began to look like a library. As Abby said: “We had, like, 5,000 books, and then 27 boxes that weren’t counted.”

Over 500 students at the local school can now pick out 12 different books to take home. “It overran our house for a little while,” Abby’s dad, Jason Ross said. “But it’s amazing. The community really wants to help. If somebody’s name was in it, we wanted to cover that up, because this is really their book,” Jason said. “We want them to make sure that they feel special when they get it.”

Abby says she’s happy other children will have their own books to read this Summer and said: “I hope you enjoy reading your books.”
