NO MAJOR SPOILERS

Zero One Zero Two is neat, unusual, unnerving and darkly humorous in places. In many ways, not really a sci fi but with a lot of what fans of SF love.

Most folk want what they know but if you are prepared to try something just a bit different you will be richly rewarded with this little book.

Yes it’s post-apocalyptic but not so far from what we are staring in the face right now that you could comfortably dismiss it. So – for example – there is reference to land breaking that is clearly a reference to the effects of fracking and eerily echoes what is happening in Oklahoma state in America right now. Some of the most startling descriptions take you by surprise and understatement is used to great effect.

I also love the idea of a character at the centre of a sci fi novel which revolves around extreme technology who has about as much understanding of that technology as I have about my phone. It’s a nice touch. I am a bit sick of stories (movies) where everyone is an expert and everyone knows everything or can work it out just in the nick of time…
