“Nineteen Eighty-Four is the one book I think should be essential reading for everyone.”

NO MAJOR SPOILERS

If there was a definitive political novel then Nineteen Eighty-Four is it.

Orwell’s clear view of the political world ensures this book has stayed relevant forever, as relevant when written in 1948 as it was in 1984 and today in the 21st century.

The book’s protagonist Winston Smith knows there must be more beyond this dystopian world, he understand the double-speak and the lies are just that but maybe his mistake is that he thinks in knowing he is special and has cracked some great secret. Human curiosity will be his downfall and ultimately it is.

From everything from war, to politics, to fake news and the post-truth world we seem to be living in today, Orwell nailed it all, in this perfect dystopian read. With most books I tell people to read it if it’s their thing, but with Nineteen Eighty-Four it’s the one book I think should be essential reading for everyone!

Nineteen Eighty-Four is one of those novels that is quoted by everyone, nearly everyone claims to have read and understood it and it’s used as political fodder almost every day. Many of those people misunderstand it, take quotes out of context and really do get the wrong end of this dystopian stick. You’ve read the quotes, you understand the concept, but it’s not enough, please read the book too!
