“An offbeat thriller from Kathryn White.”

NO MAJOR SPOILERS

I am not sure where to begin with this book. A talking cat, a hit and run, death and dark family secrets are just a few of the many storylines in this book. Peppa is the main character in this quick read, is at the very centre of the madness and I couldn’t get a hook on her at all. The detail focussed on what was happening to Peppa (which is a whole lot!) and her own thoughts, feelings and personality were not present enough for me to believe in her.

There were some plot lines which didn’t quite add up for me; For example, Peppa spends most of the book saying she isn’t good enough for one particular man, but every man she comes into contact with falls for her beauty. The paranormal part of the book seemed to ‘jump the shark’ a little and I could tell very early on what was happening so there was no twist or suprise to hold me to the end.

I didn’t dislike the book, but I think it just had far too much going on in too few pages. I do think the storyline of Peppa and her father had the potential to be extremely powerful if the book was longer and the paranormal side was dropped, enabling the reader to really get into the characters. It felt like there were two books fighting over 180 pages to be heard.

The Goodreads reviews seem positive and I always want to support an author trying to get out there and so I’m sure plenty of readers will enjoy the fast, colourful and quirky ride. I just didn’t feel I had enough time to understand, love, care about or even hate any of the characters.

2.5 stars out of 5 from me
