This book envelops you in a cocoon of warmth and you wish you could stay in it forever!
One of those that I wished would go on and on!
This was my first ‘book of letters’ novel and it whet my appetite for the style!
A letter from Dawsey Adams in Guernsey to writer Juliet Dawson in London turns out to be the start of a beautiful relationship between Juliet and the people of Guernsey.
Written in a light vein and packed with humour, the book nevertheless addresses the very many disturbing aspects of a war that caused devastation on an unimaginable scale.
It also brings out the many different aspects of human nature that make themselves known in such times. Those you trust may turn against you and help may come from the most unexpected quarters.
What makes it stand out is the people of Guernsey and the amazing bond they share. Their friendship and sense of community and their ability to make outsiders feel like one among them immediately is so heart warming.
I definitely wish I could go and live among them and experience it for myself!
Read it for the second time and it has only got better!
