“Travels with George . . . is quintessential Philbrick–a lively, courageous, and masterful achievement.”

NO MAJOR SPOILERS

Just finished Travels With George by Nathaniel Philbrick. Non- Fiction. Audio version.
This book, somewhat reminiscent of Steinbeck’s Travels With Charlie, is a very interesting and entertaining book about the author , his wife Molly and his dog Dora taking a car trip following in Washingtons footsteps from Mount Vernon to his Inauguration in NYC then to the first capitol in Philadelphia, and then Washington’s tour of the colonies, North and South.

Full of anecdotal information, interviewing current historians and people whose relatives actually saw the President on his trip, Philbrick explains Washington’s motives for the trip, what he wanted to see and accomplish, and the importance of the first President, even today.

The author also writes about the purchase of the lands and the development of the nation’s capital in DC
Very personalized with lots of History, this is an excellent book to read, not too long, but with good attention to the details important to the story
Highly recommended
