“Robert James Waller is one of the most descriptive writers, magnificent!”

NO MAJOR SPOILERS

Carlisle McMillan is searching for a place. A place away from the grinding gears of progress. Has he found what he’s looking for in Yerkes County? A place of wide open spaces and mysterious buttes, Salamander seems to be perfect for the wandering master carpenter to finally settle. But what happens when government and big business threaten to take it all away?

Robert James Waller has done it again! With his smooth writing and excellent descriptive prose he paints a picture so realistic you feel as if you could step right into it.

I have admitted this before and I’ll say it again…I have a habit of judging books by their covers. Waller is not an author I would have searched out before I read The Long Night of Winchell Dear. Now he is near the top of my “must read everything he wrote” list.

Note: there is a very slight tie in to The Bridges of Madison County but it is only about 5 sentences near the end of the book and is not a spoiler if you haven’t read Bridges.

The choice of narrator, the same used for The Long Night of Winchell Dear I believe, is perfect. There is a gentle flow to his voice which fits perfectly with the writing.

I can’t wait to get my earphones on more Robert James Waller books. I’m giving this one a 4.25 on the bookometer.

I hope you enjoy it too!
