“Summon the Keeper is book 1 in a fantasy trilogy. This review is for the entire series”

SOME MINOR SPOILERS

This is the first in a series of 3 urban fantasy books. Claire Hanson is a Keeper. One of those rare individuals who can use magic in order to restore the balance/repair holes in this reality.

If this sounds exciting, exotic and esoteric, it is … and isn’t – as her parents, cat and younger sister constantly remind her.

Claire gets summoned to a seen-better-days guesthouse with (as it turns out) the highly pertinent name of The Elysian Fields. Along the way, we encounter a seriously attractive young man, an oversexed ghost, some mythical beings, a Keeper that has turned to the dark side and a schizophrenic manifestation of hell that argues with itself as much as it does with Claire. This list is by no means exhaustive.

This is Huff at her absolute best with a great story, crisp and witty dialogue, and some seriously funny ideas. The prosaic way in which both Claire and her immediate family deal with the bizarre and supernatural encounters is genius. The second and third books in the series, whilst good, don’t quite come up to the same standard – probably because Huff has set the bar so high with this one. This is a brilliant book if you’re after a light and entertaining read.
