Red Emma's - Baltimore, MD

Located near the epicenter of the Baltimore Uprising, Red Emma is a worker collective with a strong radical orientation.

Red Emma’s radical book selection has a nice balance between competing leftist ideologies, different regions and topics of interest, and new authors and stalwarts of the left such as Noam Chomsky and Naomi Klein. Red Emma’s also has a delightful selection of  radical magazines and zines.

Red Emma’s frequently brings authors into its community space for readings and talks.  Red Emma’s maintains the Baltimore Free School which often features self-directed discussion groups on topics of interest.

Red Emma’s features a full- service restaurant with an extensive vegetarian/vegan menu. Entrees are typical created with seasonal, ethically- sourced ingredients. I have come to appreciate Red Emma’s restaurant as it allows for longer discussions of books with like-minded patrons.

Finally, Red Emma’s bathrooms have become canvases for patronizing graffiti artists. The bathrooms are periodically repainted, but, in between, political manifestos, murals, budding ideas, and quick doodles enliven the toileting experience.
