Margaret Atwood (The Handmaid’s Tale) is being celebrated on a Canadian stamp.
Her contributions to Canadian literature are being honoured with a special postage stamp through Canada Post.
Canada Post launched the stamp at a Toronto event on Thursday 25th November. Guests included filmmaker Sarah Polley and activist Ceta Ramkhalawansingh.
The post, now on Instagram, shows a photo of Atwood and the quote: “a word after a word after a word is power,” from her poem Spelling.
Atwood playfully explained how her peers were now jealous with “stamp envy” and told her “you’re not even dead yet!”
The 82-year old did explain that plenty of those featured on Canadian stamps are still alive, but that there were will jokes about her “lack of deadness.”
Atwood is one of Canada’s greatest exports, and one of their most successful writers. Her bibliography of over 50 books of poetry, fiction, criticism, essays and graphic novels is celebrated all over the world.
