The winner of the Ted Hughes Award for new work in poetry has been announced and the 2016 winner is Hollie McNish for her poetic memoir Nobody Told Me.
The Ted Hughes Award for New Work in Poetry seeks to recognise excellence in poetry, highlighting outstanding contributions made by poets to our cultural life. Hollie McNish was presented the award and the £5,000 cash prize, donated by Carol Ann Duffy at an award ceremony.
Nobody Told Me is a poetic memoir about motherhood, told in a collection of poems and stories. Anyone trying to raise children in the 21st century is likely to laugh, nod, and cry along with Hollie as she tells her tale of raising children in a world of sex, commercialism, and all the dramas of modern life.
Sold alongside authors like Bill Bryson and Caitlin Moran, Nobody Told Me is so much more than a poetry collection, it’s a tale of modern motherhood in bite size pieces told with conviction and love and is likely to appeal to fans of memoirs, poetry, and just mothers. If you’re looking for a good introduction to poetic works, this just might be it.
