A UK student went viral recently for her stunning pieces of art on book edges.

22 year old Maisie Jackson posted videos of her completing the artworks on classic book collections such as Dune, The Lord of the Rings, and The Hobbit to her TikTok account @maisie_matilda.

The fore-edge painting videos have since reached millions of viewers.

Jackson explained that she has been painting for years but attempted the fore-edge paintings last year for the first time with her copy of The Hobbit by JRR Tolkien.

The young artist posted the video on TikTok “just for a bit of fun” and never imagined it would become so popular. Jackson said her favourite books to paint for are copies of Tolkien’s work, and each work typically takes anywhere between a few hours to even a few days to finish.

“Tolkien works best for me, as I was always predominantly a landscape painter, and Middle Earth is full of an amazing variety of landscape; mountains, forests, rivers and beautiful architectural concepts,” she said.

“I often get very carried away with the details,” she added.

“My main aim is to bring fore-edge painting back into popular visual culture,” she said. “It is currently deemed ‘critically endangered’ by the Heritage Craft Association UK.”
