A religious discourse which is intended primarily for spiritual edification rather than doctrinal instruction.

Also, a tedious moralising lecture.

Old French from ecclesiastical Latin homilia, from Greek, ‘discourse, conversation’ (in ecclesiastical use, ‘sermon’), from homilos ‘crowd’.
