Word of the Day – Anachronism

By May 7, 2015Word of the Day

Anachronism (adj)

an-ak-ron-ism

A thing belonging to a period other than the one which it exists in, particularly in a conspicuous fashion.

I love this word, I learned it at school and when I struggled to comprehend the definition my teacher said “Imagine an oil painting of Admiral Nelson wearing a digital watch. The watch would be the anachronism.”

Example sentences

“The modern guttering showing in that costume drama was such a glaring anachronism.”

“Sadly he’s become a bit of anachronism in his own time.”
