A built-in housing for a ship’s compass.
Late 15th century (as bittacle): from Spanish bitácula, bitácora or Portuguese bitacola, from Latin habitaculum ‘dwelling place’, from habitare ‘inhabit’. The change to binnacle occurred in the mid 18th century.
