Cockalorum (noun)(informal)(dated)
kok-a-lo-rem
A self-important man. Someone who has an inflated opinion of their own skills.
I will happily fund a national campaign to get this wonderful archaic word back into every day usage. The next day you meet a cockalorum you must immediately tell him what he is! From now onwards, all politicians and jobsworths will be known as cockalorums! This isn’t just a word of the day, it’s a word for every day!
Example sentences
“The cockalorums at the council need to realise what exactly it is that they do.”
“He was always known as being a bit of a cockalorum, he could pick faults in others but never see his own.”
