Kummerspeck (noun) (German)
kUm-ir-shpek
Excess weight gained due to emotional eating.
This went around the Internet as a meme a few months ago with many translating it literally as grief-bacon, while that’s a great translation and kind of fits a more honest (if less humorous) translation would be kummer – grief/sorrow, speck – fat, adipose. It’s a wonderful word simply because I cannot think of an English translation, making it a perfect candidate for Word of the Day.
