(rhetoric) The repetition of a word in an altered or more expressive sense, or for the sake of emphasis.

Late 16th century. From post-classical Latin ploce repetition of the same word in a different sense from ancient Greek πλοκή anything twisted or woven, web, in Hellenistic Greek also used of rhetorical figures from an ablaut variant of the base of πλέκειν to plait.
