Mid 16th century; earliest use found in John Bradford (c1510–1555), evangelical preacher and martyr. Probably from pork + -et, after Anglo-Norman and Middle French porchet small pig, piglet (1258 in Old French; 1611 in French as †porquet or post-classical Latin porchetum, porchettus.
