10 of Elie Wiesel’s Most Powerful Quotes

By July 3, 2016September 30th, 2017Authors, Quotations

Eliezer (Elie) Wiesel was born on September 30th, 1928 and died on July 2nd 2016. The Romanian born writer, professor, political activist and most famously holocaust survivor has left the world poorer for his absence, and his famous account of his days in a Nazi Labour Camp, Night, is a must read for anyone.

As the world mourns the passing of this wonderful man, we’ve rounded together some of his most powerful quotes, from Night, from his speeches and from his days as an activist.

The opposite of love is not hate, it’s indifference.

There are victories of the soul and spirit. Sometimes, even if you lose, you win.

No human race is superior; no religious faith is inferior. All collective judgments are wrong. Only racists make them.

When a person doesn’t have gratitude, something is missing in his or her humanity.

Once you bring life into the world, you must protect it. We must protect it by changing the world.

We must take sides. Neutrality helps the oppressor, never the victim. Silence encourages the tormentor, never the tormented.

There may be times when we are powerless to prevent injustice, but there must never be a time when we fail to protest.

I write to understand as much as to be understood.

Mankind must remember that peace is not God’s gift to his creatures; peace is our gift to each other.

Human beings should be held accountable. Leave God alone. He has enough problems.

The world has lost a wise and caring man, but we do at least get to keep all the words of wisdom. I can’t recommend Night highly enough and if you’re interested in Holocaust memoirs, it’s a must read!
