Herbert George Wells  better known as HG Wells was a British author who was born on the 21st of September 1866. He is probably best known for his science fiction novel The War of the Worlds which is famously reported as causing world panic when it was first broadcast on the radio on October 30th 1938 although more recently the scale of panic has been questioned.

Wells wrote a vast number of novels, as well as books on history, politics, social commentary, textbooks and rules for war games. Vocally political and widely considered a controversial figure he would suffer a decline in his literary reputation and on 13 August 1946 HG Wells passed away aged 79. In memory of a great author and an enigmatic man here are 10 World Changing Quotes from HG Wells the father of science fiction.

“We all have our time machines, don’t we. Those that take us back are memories… And those that carry us forward, are dreams.”

“If you fell down yesterday, stand up today.”

“Sometimes, you have to step outside of the person you’ve been and remember the person you were meant to be. The person you want to be. The person you are.”

“If you are in difficulties with a book, try the element of surprise: attack it at an hour when it isn’t expecting it.”

“We must not allow the clock and the calendar to blind us to the fact that each moment of life is a miracle and mystery.”

“The past is the beginning of the beginning and all that is and has been is but the twilight of the dawn.”

“Leaders should lead as far as they can and then vanish. Their ashes should not choke the fire they have lit.”

“Every time I see an adult on a bicycle, I no longer despair for the future of the human race.”

“It is not reasonable that those who gamble with men’s lives should not pay with their own.”

“If we don’t end war, war will end us.”

Though many of these are from over half a century ago it seems we have learned nothing and all of these are as relevant today as they were back then.
