NO MAJOR SPOILERS

A fascinating novel of psychological suspense, set in Victorian times in the English countryside, best describes this book!

It is interestingly told in the form of narratives by multiple characters central to each part of the story.

It has all the elements of a classic mystery.. the delicate heiress, her protective sister, the man she is engaged to marry and a mysterious stranger who warns her about him!

Walter Hartright, who gets involved in the affairs of Limmeridge House and it’s occupants when he is appointed the drawing master for the two ladies there, is the first to encounter the woman in white.

Trying to find out more, he sets in motion a chain of events that has far reaching consequences.

I particularly liked Marion Halcombe, the fiercely loyal sister who is no dainty flower as was the demand of the times.

And the imposing Count Fosco keeps you guessing which side he is on while making sure you cannot ignore him!

This is one of those books that should be particularly savoured over a period of time. The language and the proprieties of the time it is set in, contribute delightfully!

Definitely 5 stars!
