BBC Announces Virtual Reality Tours Across UK Libraries

By May 19, 2019Libraries, News

The BBC has announced that it will be launching virtual reality (VR) experiences free of charge in libraries across the UK for those who want to try out VR technology. These experiences will come in the form of short demos which will allow users to experience the technology with a number of demonstrations, from a documentary set in the Democratic Republic of the Congo, to a reconstruction of being onboard a Lancaster bomber during an air raid on Berlin during the Second World War.

As Yahoo reports, this year, the BBC will set up VR headsets in over 40 libraries across the UK as part of the BBC’s VR Hub programme. Those who visit will get a hands-on experience with the technology and can even take part in a VR episode of People Just Do Nothing, all totally free of charge.

The tour begins this Friday and will travel through the UK over the Summer. Zillah Watson, head of the BBC VR Hub, said: “Virtual reality is an extraordinary way to experience a story, by immersing yourself in it completely you get a huge connection to it. The trouble is that headsets are expensive, and only a very small number of people have them at home.

“That’s why we wanted to bring some of our favourite experiences out on the road, and by putting them into local libraries across the UK we’re hoping to give everyone the chance to try out virtual reality.”

If you’re interested in checking it out then you’ll want to stay tuned to the tour’s online schedule, which will update with new tour dates every week.
