The bookstore in Canada where you can buy a book and a kitten!

By February 5, 2020Bookshops, News

Have you ever wished for a bookstore where you can do more than buy books? How about one where you could adopt a cat to keep you company while you read?

Located just outside of Halifax in Nova Scotia, the Canadian cat-crazy cafe is full of your favourite books, and some furry friends! Otis & Clementine’s Books & Coffee is a warm and comfy place where you can find kittens napping, playing, and getting into trouble, waiting for you to adopt them.

Helmke first turned her bookstore into a foster home for kittens in the spring of 2019 and has never looked back, getting each furry friend from South Paw Conservation, who allow the bookstore to foster the cats until the find a forever home.

“I thought it would be a fun thing to do and I thought people would enjoy it, but it’s turned out to be so popular. They jump on piles of books, they hang out on the albums, they sit on people’s laps, curl up on their shoulders. They run the place.” said Helmke, who has been running the cafe for eight years. “It almost feels like it’s a turning point. The used book business is a pretty tough business on a good day. So I’m thrilled that people like it, and people are coming to the store.”

All kittens fostered by Helmke at the bookstore are adopted quickly as customers can’t leave the fluffballs at the bookstore once they have met them. The SPCA takes care of the adoption process, and the adopting family pay $255 to cover medical expenses, and provide references.
