Your 32 Favourite American (USA) Authors

By July 29, 2015July 3rd, 2018Discussion and Recommendations

With so many reading addicts to choose from, grabbing your loves and hates really couldn’t be easier and this July we asked who your favourite American author is. As always you aren’t backwards in coming forward with your opinions and we received around 400 replies naming over 120 different American authors. We couldn’t include them all, but I’ve added them all up, added the votes up and from your selections we have your 32 favourite American authors. By America we mean of course the United States rather than the continent.

1. Stephen King

The most named author by far for our poll is possibly the most popular American author of all time. It is of course the King of horror, Stephen King! What he writes may not be considered classic literature by many but there’s no doubting his popularity all around the world.

Check out Stephen King in our review section.

2 John Steinbeck

In second place is John Steinbeck, and with Of Mice and Men considering staple school reading many have found it a great introduction to other stories from this wonderful author.

3. Mark Twain

In third place is maybe the most obvious choice and possibly the first name that comes to mind when you think of American authors. Mark Twain is synonymous with the country and with literature itself.

4. Ernest Hemingway

Ernest Hemingway came next, still loved by the American public despite his self exile to Cuba and the author of many a great American tome.

5. Edgar Allan Poe

Fifth place goes to Edgar Allan Poe, responsible for many a night scared to look over the covers and possibly the most famous author of gothic literature of all time.

According to you, there were have the five most popular US authors and following on from that completing the top ten is:

F. Scott Fitzgerald
John Grisham
Nathaniel Hawthorne
Harper Lee
Nora Roberts

It’s so great to see classics and contemporary writers in the same list and shows the great mix of opinions we get on the page. We’re not stopping there though, continuing the list we have:

Pat Conroy
John Irving
William Faulkner
Diana Gabaldon
Elizabeth George
Ray Bradbury
Jack London
Laura Ingalls Wilder
James Patterson
Amy Tan
J.D Salinger
Kurt Vonnegut
H.P Lovecraft
Henry David Thoreou
Anne Rice
Dean Koontz
Robert Heinlein
Dr Seuss
Sidney Sheldon
Danielle Steel
Rick Riordan
Nicholas Sparks

No doubt there’ll be plenty you’ll agree with and plenty you’ll disagree with too, as always our polls invite plenty of opinions but they’re your polls, your lists, we just collate the results!
